Navigation in Electronic Worlds: Research Review for Depth Oral Exam
نویسنده
چکیده
Navigation is a fundamental human activity. It occurs in a wide range of activities and contexts, and it has accordingly been studied by a range of disciplines. In the social sciences, anthropologists have studied the tools and techniques of different cultures, including Western ones. Psychologists have studied the cognitive structures and processes involved in human navigation. In the field of urban design, architects and urban planners have studied the relationship between the built environment and navigational activities, particularly with an eye to improving both. In the applied and information sciences, humancomputer interaction (HCI) and related researchers continue to investigate human information-seeking in large-scale information environments. Such environments tend to be either document-based hypermedia such as the World-Wide Web (WWW or Web) or continuous, spatial worlds such as virtual reality (VR). Both approaches are widespread in industrial applications and academic research.

Navigation in shared spaces
Designing navigable electronic environments usually involve looking at navigation from various perspectives. This paper describes some of the views that have to be considered when designing for navigation in electronic worlds with special reference made to shared spaces. Current ongoing projects involving issues related to navigation in shared electronic spaces are also briefly described. These...
متن کاملCombining physical and semantical navigation in three-dimensional information visualization
The eld of information visualization is in permanent expansion and new and innovative ways of visualizing large volumes of abstract data are being developed. The use of virtual metaphoric worlds is one of them, but these visualizations per se are only truly useful if the user is provided a means of exploring the information. A common way of data exploration is navigation. In the case of three-d...
متن کاملNavigation In Graphical User Interfaces
Current work on navigation in electronic worlds is based on the assumption that geographic and electronic worlds are similar enough to make it possible to use results from work on environmental psychology and related areas in the design of electronic information spaces. The present paper is an attempt to analyze the underlying assumptions behind this approach in some detail, as well as an attem...
متن کاملParallel Worlds: Spatial and Textual Representations of Information Structure in VR
Navigation is central to information seeking in electronic worlds. Previous research on the physical world and virtual ones has considered the impact of environmental structure on navigation and learning. Such structure can be either spatial or textual. I propose an exploratory study to evaluate the effects of combining spatial and textual representations of information structure in different w...
